Weighted GPA Calculator

Weighted GPA calculator

Pick a grade and course type for each class. Honors adds 0.5 and AP / IB / dual enrollment adds 1.0 by default; change the bonuses to match your school.

Enter grades and credits to see your GPA.

A weighted GPA adds bonus points to harder classes before averaging: usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual enrollment. Schools differ, so change the bonuses to match yours. The calculator shows your weighted and unweighted GPA side by side.

Worked example

Three one-credit classes: AP Biology (A), Honors English (B) and Algebra (A).

Weighted GPA: (5.0 + 3.5 + 4.0) ÷ 3 = 4.17. Unweighted: (4.0 + 3.0 + 4.0) ÷ 3 = 3.67.

Frequently asked questions

What is a weighted GPA?

A GPA that gives extra points for advanced classes, so a B in AP can count as much as an A in a regular class. It can be higher than 4.0.

How much is Honors or AP worth?

The most common setup is +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB and dual enrollment. Some schools use other steps or no weighting at all, so check your school profile.

Do colleges use weighted GPA?

Many colleges recalculate GPA on their own scale and look at course rigor separately, so the number on your transcript may not be the one they compare.

Do I get bonus points for an F?

No. A failing grade earns 0.0 with no bonus, which this calculator follows.

What is the highest weighted GPA?

With +1.0 for AP the cap is 5.0, but the maximum differs by school. Some use a 4.5 or 6.0 scale.

Is a 5.0 weighted GPA good?

A 5.0 on a scale where AP adds 1.0 means straight A's in AP or IB classes, the top of that scale. Because schools weight differently, colleges usually look at your unweighted GPA and course rigor too.

Do P, NP and W grades count?

No. They are left out of both the weighted and the unweighted GPA.
