Target GPA Calculator

Target GPA calculator

Fill in the fields to see the GPA you need.

The average GPA you need each remaining term is (goal GPA × total credits at graduation − current GPA × credits done) ÷ remaining credits. If the answer is above 4.0, the goal cannot be reached on a 4.0 scale. The earlier you set a goal, the lower the GPA you need each term.

Worked example

Priya has a 3.1 GPA over 45 credits and wants to graduate with a 3.4. She has 5 terms left at 15 credits each.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the GPA I need to graduate with a certain GPA?

Needed GPA = (goal × total credits at graduation − current GPA × credits done) ÷ remaining credits. The calculator does this and splits it into an average per term.

What if the needed GPA is above 4.0?

Then the goal is out of reach on a 4.0 scale with your remaining credits. Lower the goal, add terms or credits, or ask whether your school allows grade replacement.

Should I count summer classes?

Yes, if they count toward your degree GPA. Add them to your terms left or raise your credits per term to match.

What GPA do I need for Latin honors?

Cum laude often starts around 3.5, magna cum laude around 3.7 and summa cum laude around 3.9, but each college sets its own cutoffs. Check your student handbook.

Does transfer credit count?

Usually transfer credits count toward graduation but not your GPA at the new school. Enter only the credits that count in your current GPA.
